The Millard Fuller Foundation has reiterated its commitment to the provision of truly affordable homes to low income earners in Nigeria.
Speaking at a virtual event organised by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to commemorate the World Habitat Day which held on Monday, 5th October, 2020, the Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Sam Odia said that every human being deserves to have access to simple, decent, and affordable housing.
Odia who stated that Fuller created over 11,600 temporary jobs during its recently concluded 600-unit GrandLuvu housing project noted that young people are also being trained in construction skills development and the use of power tools as a means of making them self-reliant, while providing starter homes for less than 2million Naira per unit as 78% of the population in Nigeria earns less than N40,000.00 a month.
“Despite the high demand for our houses, we are contending with offtake financing which has proven to be a major challenge as far as homeownership in Nigeria is concerned. This has prompted us to design bridging facilities for those who are ready to move into our homes while they wait for the FMBN loan to come through,” Odia said.
With regards to building sustainable estates, Odia said that Fuller is focused on developing green buildings and this has led to the planning of an off-grid project which should kick-start in the coming year.
While urging the government to support ideas that are being implemented on a small scale in the bid to scale them up as against reinventing the wheel, Odia concluded that Fuller is currently carrying out a research to ensure that more persons are able to afford a decent home.
The event which held with the theme, "Housing for All: A Better Urban Future" aimed at providing an opportunity to engage stakeholders in discussions on the transformative impact of COVID-19 on the housing and human settlement sector, and to explore the possibilities of building sustainable societies.
The event had major stakeholders in the housing industry in attendance, notable speakers at the event which was moderated by Mark Eddo Founder, Mark Eddo Media Ltd International Communications and Business Consultant include, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Hon.
